 Michael J. Dapice
Michael J. Dapice was born April 9, 1925, in Port Chester to Daniel and Theresa Sarrachino Dapice.. In Rye his family lived at 69 Maple Avenue. Michael was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1943. He enlisted in 1943 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Michael served with the 7th Armored Division of the U.S. Army during World War II. The 7th Armored Division ("Lucky Seventh") was an armored division of the United States Army that saw distinguished service on the Western Front, from August 1944 until May 1945, during World War II.
During the Battle of the Bulge, the division was transferred to the U.S. First Army, under Lieutenant General Courtney Hodges, and ordered to St. Vith, Belgium, a critical road and rail center needed by the Germans to supply their offensive. Over the course of almost a week, the 7th Armored (along with elements of the 106th, the 28th Infantry Division and 9th Armored Divisions) absorbed much of the weight of the German drive, throwing the German time table into great disarray, before being forced to withdraw west of the Salm River on 23 December.
The division moved to the area of Manhay, Belgium, and by the end of December had cleared the town of the enemy. They were then relieved by the 75th Infantry Division. After a brief rest in January 1945, the division returned to positions near St. Vith, attacked, and re-captured the town on 23 January 1945.
After the war, Michael was honorably discharged and returned home. On Dec. 12, 1948, He married Marie Massa at St Gregory the Great Church in Harrison. They settled in Rye and had two children.
Michael was general manager and executive vice president of Aero Nautical Inc. of Greenwich, Conn., for 27 years. In 1977, he started his own business, Ensign Dinghies and Marine, a manufacturer of small fiberglass boats in Rye. -'
Michael was a parishioner of the Church of the Resurrection in Rye.
Michael J. Dapice, a lifelong resident of Rye, died Tuesday, June 16, 1998, at United Hospital - Medical Center in Port Chester. He was 73.
In addition to his wife, Michael was survived by two daughters, Michaela Popp of Rye Brook and Michele Sugantino of Hawthorne; a brother, Daniel Jr. of Rye Brook; and three grandchildren. A sister, Lucy Sabito, died earlier.
A funeral Mass was held at the Church of the Resurrection and burial followed in St. Marys Cemetery in Rye Brook.
